Ticks in cats: how to detect and get rid
Summer time – the time of walking in the fresh air. But in nature, in the forests and even parks of pets waiting for the danger – ticks. How to detect and get rid of the parasite?
Types of ticks
There are the following types of parasites:
Ear Ticks. These smallest insects are not visible to humans, they can be detected only by characteristic symptoms;
Subcutaneous mites are also called scabies. Such parasites are very tenacious and cause weakening of the immune system. Ticks cause skin redness and hair loss;
Forest ticks are the most dangerous parasites. Despite the name, they also live in city parks. There are different types: from subcutaneous to intracellular.
Often, ticks cause the death of the cat, and therefore it is very important to pay attention to the alarming symptoms in time.
How to detect the parasite
Cat itches from ticks
Cats do not know how to talk and complain about their state of health. Fortunately, even invisible ticks can be uncovered by accompanying symptoms.
Ear ticks cause the cat to desire to constantly scratch and press the ears, shake their heads. In the ear, blood clots are noticeable, in advanced cases there is pus and an unpleasant smell.
Subcutaneous mites cause the cat to itch strongly, sometimes to the blood. Pet skin is inflamed and reddened. Wool falls out, exposing damaged skin, which causes various diseases.
Forest ticks are easy to spot: they stick to the skin. After a bite, the insect quickly grows to the size of olives. Intracellular mites give themselves bright symptoms: the cat begins to fever, intoxication and weakness. Often the temperature rises, begins a strong heartbeat.
How to get rid of tick cats
Independently, it is possible to get rid of skin parasites only, and not always. In other cases, contact your veterinarian immediately: the condition of the cat is dangerous.
If you find a sucking tick on a cat, estimate how long the parasite has been sitting here. Swollen skin and large size of the insect suggest that it eats more than one day. In this case, do not remove the tick yourself: there is a risk of infecting the cat. A device for removing ticks
A small tick that has not penetrated deep into the skin can be gently removed without the help of a veterinarian. Follow the instructions:
Wear surgical gloves. So you reduce the risk of infection – many diseases are transmitted to a person through the skin;
Do not use thread and tweezers if you do not have experience with tick removal in this way. Do not water the insect with liquids – the bloodsucker will spit them into the wound;
Do not panic or try to pull the insect out as soon as possible;
Put the cat on a light cloth to catch the parasite while trying to escape;
Gently take the tick and slowly turn it in different directions, gently twisting;
If the insect is too small to take it with your fingers, lightly stroke it with your fingers – the bloodsucker will jump out by itself.
After removing the tick, take it to the laboratory for a study on tolerable diseases. If this is not possible, burn the insect – so you will surely destroy it.
Treat the wound of the cat with green paint and observe the subsequent state of the pet. At the slightest suspicion, take the animal to the vet clinic.
How to save a pet
You can even prevent the attack of the parasite. There are special remedies for tick bites, such as:
Collars impregnated with a special substance. A simple method of protection – you put on a pet and ticks him nothing. However, make sure that the cat does not eat the collar: the active substance is poisonous;
Drops – the most popular remedy for ticks. The medicine is applied between the shoulder blades once a month. If the cat does not have allergies, this is ideal;
Sprays for wool. The drug is sprayed on the cat and make sure that the spray does not get into the eyes or mouth. Pet can not be licked, so the tool is difficult to use.
After each walk, be sure to inspect the cat, even if you use such tools. Do not be afraid of ticks: if you find the parasite in time and know what to do with it, there is nothing terrible.
