How to tame a wild kitten?
Many people who dream of a pet, think about how to shelter a street kitten or a cat, but they doubt whether the animal will become obedient, will not spoil the furniture or mark the territory in the apartment. Without a doubt, street animals are amenable to education. And a little kitten is much easier to make a good and kind pet than an adult cat. The main thing is to have patience and follow some simple rules.
Determine how wild
For a start it is worth understanding whether the animal was always homeless or was recently thrown away. A wild kitten who was born on the street, as a rule, hisses and is afraid of people, he has an unkempt coat. If the animal meows at the sight of a person, does not try to hide in a panic, and its coat is relatively clean, then, most likely, it was recently kicked out of the house. Such a kitten will be easier to tame.
A wild animal can also be raised, but it will take more time, and some problems may still not be solved. For example, a cat may for a lifetime keep distrust of strangers or fear of them.
When the pet is in the house, he needs to give time to get used to a little in a dark corner. The first time you should not bother him again and touch. But some procedures must be carried out almost immediately, without delay. First, it is necessary to check the nose and eyes – the discharge of them indicates the presence of infection. Secondly, you should wash the animal using a special shampoo for kittens to get rid of ectoparasites. Be prepared for the fact that the kitten is not accustomed to such procedures and therefore will bite and scratch.
The pet will need to immediately and immediately show the veterinarian to determine the age, take the necessary tests and advise on vaccination, feeding and care.
When a selected pet gets used to the house a little, you can begin to tame it. For a start it is worth putting next to a secluded place where he sits, a bowl of food. At first, the kitten is recommended to offer wet food – such food is likely to attract the attention of a hungry animal, and it will come out of the shelter.
You should gradually move the bowl with food closer to the middle of the room in which the pet is hiding, forcing him to go farther and farther. Then you can offer food by putting it on an extended arm.
When you manage to feed the kitten from your hand, you can try to stroke it, but without sudden movements, smoothly putting your hand on your back or face.
The street kitten is used to going to the toilet on the ground or sand, so for a start, you can take a regular rectangular tray without a net and put sand and earth there. It is not very hygienic, but is a temporary measure. A kitten should be planted in it every time it starts to fuss. As a rule, it is enough to do this several times so that the pet understands the purpose of the tray. In no case can not be punished, if he did not immediately realize, but should persist again and again to put him in the tray.
Over time, the sand must be replaced with a filler. If the process of training to the tray is already completed, but the kitten still sometimes goes to the toilet in places not intended for this, then this is evidence that he feels uncomfortable for a number of reasons: due to stress, lack of attention, a new pet, etc. d.
How long will the domestication take?
No specialist zoopsychologist will say exactly how long it will take to adapt a selected animal. It can take from several days to several months: it all depends on how wild the kitten was, on its character, age and atmosphere in the new house. But with proper care and patience, every little savage will turn into a cute pet.
